Dried oregano
Location: Crete
Botanical classification: Lamiaceae family
A note from the creator:
Native to the Mediterranean basin, oregano is one of the most emblematic aromatic herbs in southern cuisines. Harvested under the Cretan sun, this oregano develops a powerful, warm, and intensely aromatic scent, very different from the often-fainter versions found in stores.
I particularly appreciate its herbaceous, slightly peppery, and almost wild side, capable of very simply transforming a grill, a tomato sauce, or some roasted vegetables.
Description:
Used since antiquity for both its culinary and medicinal qualities, oregano holds a central place in Greek, Italian, Turkish, Portuguese, and North African cuisines.
Its powerful aroma holds up very well to cooking and pairs perfectly with slow-cooked dishes, marinades, and barbecue cooking.
Traditionally, it accompanies:
- tomato sauces,
- pizzas,
- grilled vegetables,
- white meats,
- lamb,
- or Mediterranean fish.
Infused, it is also known for its digestive and comforting properties.
Pairings:
Oregano pairs perfectly with:
Grilled meats and marinades
Roasted or plancha chicken
Lamb and skewers
Roasted or sautéed vegetables
Tomato sauces and pizzas
Mediterranean salads
Grilled fish
Vegetable soups
Usage tip:
Add during or at the end of cooking to preserve its full aromatic power. Excellent mixed with olive oil to prepare a summer marinade or a Mediterranean vinaigrette.
Favorite:
Simply sprinkled on heirloom tomatoes with good olive oil and a few feta shavings.
Sensation:
Powerful, warm, and intensely aromatic, oregano develops herbaceous, slightly peppery, and resinous notes, typical of sun-dried Mediterranean herbs.
Health benefits:
Oregano has been recognized since antiquity for its antiseptic, antispasmodic, and digestive properties. Traditionally consumed as an infusion, it is used to alleviate digestive problems, colds, and general fatigue.
Naturally rich in antioxidants, it also helps protect the body against oxidative stress.
